Tires will play a vital role in vehicle safety, even with the advent of autonomous driving. In the trucking industry, in particular, tire safety is expected to be crucial, as trucks will be operational around the clock. Despite this importance, tire safety often receives less attention from the public and even industry players.Leading truck manufacturers worldwide pay a great deal of attention to drivers’ faults, which is the most common cause of car accidents,” said Adam You, CEO of BANF, in his presentation during COMEUP2023 held from Nov 8-10 in Seoul. “BANF expects tire tech to garner greater attention to keep drivers safe in the era of autonomous driving as it’ll no longer be necessary for drivers to actively operate the vehicle,” he added.Tire issues are indeed as significant as other causes of accidents. According to research cited by the firm, damaged tires constitute the second most common cause of car accidents, accounting for around 30% of accidents annually. The startup develops solutions that analyze data from tire-mounted sensors to improve safety and efficiency.Founded in 2020, the company secured a total of 6.7 billion won ($5 million) in funding. The company made the list of 40 for a pitching competition where a total of 960 startups across the world participated during the three-day global startup event. The Miilk had the opportunity to interview Ron Lee, Head of Business Development at the tire safety solution firm. He shared insights into their solutions and the importance of tires in the safety of autonomous truckers. Below are excerpts from the interview.

스타트업은 어렵다. 스타트업을 경영하는 것은 고통스럽다. 늘 결론은 "열심히 하자"이며, 때로는 뼈를 깎는 체질 개선을 해야 겨우 살아남을 수 있다. 대한상공회의소에 따르면 국내 창업 기업 5년 차 스타트업 생존율은 2020년 기준 29.2%라고 한다. 10개 중 살아남는 기업이 3개도 되지 않는다는 뜻이다. 심지어 1년 내 사라지는 기업은 25% 정도다. 대부분의 스타트업들이 사업을 시작한 후 수익이 없는 데스밸리(Death Valley) 기간을 넘지 못한다. 미국 캘리포니아주 남동부 아마르고사와 페너민트 산맥 사이 250㎞에 달하는 거대한 협곡인 데스밸리는 실제로 보면 장관이지만, 스타트업들에겐 공포의 대상일 뿐이다. 살아남은 스타트업들은 어떻게 이 시기를 견뎠을까? 국내 최대 규모 스타트업 행사인 '컴업(COMEUP) 2023'이 11월 8일 서울 동대문디자인플라자(DDP)에서 개막했다. 둘째날인 9일 아레나2에서 진행된 '퓨처토크'에선 '바람이 없으면 직접 노를 저어라'라는 주제로 토크 세션이 개최됐다. 최용식 아웃스탠딩 대표의 사회로 김윤환 탈잉 대표, 정용희 굿샵 대표가 스타트업 대표로서 서바이벌 하는 방법에 대해 이야기를 나눴다. 온-오프라인 재능공유 서비스 탈잉은 2022년 45억 원의 적자를 기록했다. 지난해 하반기 구조조정 등을 거쳐 2023년 상반기 전체 흑자전환을 했다. 성장을 재개한 2분기 매출은 1분기 대비 46% 성장했고, 6월에는 월 영업이익 1억원 돌파로 창사 이래 최대 월 영업이익을 기록했다. 굿샵은 주류 유통 프로세스 디지털전환(DX) 플랫폼이다. 국내 첫 온라인 주류 유통 플랫폼 '월드비어마켓'은 지난 2년간 6000여개 상품, 5400여개 판매처 확보 등 10배 이상의 빠른 성장으로 시장성을 검증했다. 이들은 야외 페스티벌 통합솔루션, AI 기반의 자동화 무인주류자판기 개발 등 새로운 시장 개척에도 적극적이다. 최근 프리시리즈A 투자금을 확보했다. 김윤환 탈잉 대표와, 정용희 굿샵 대표에게 바람 잘 날 없는 스타트업을 운영하며 얻은 인사이트를 들어보았다.

The idea of women lacking interest in technology is not only outdated but also implies derogatory and controversial assumptions. Today, people of all genders actively engage with cutting-edge devices and solutions, challenging such stereotypes.Reflecting this idea, the annual COMEUP2023 conference held a talk session with two female entrepreneurs leading AI-focused startups under the theme of ‘Discover South Korea’s Future in AI with Women Entrepreneurs,’ on the second day of the event on Nov. 9 in Seoul.The discussion session was joined by Jamie(Gahye) Jeong, co-founder and CTO of construction solutions developer Zenerate, and June(Hyejun) Lee, founder and CEO of embryo AI software firm Kai Health.Both companies are two of the latest winners of a competition, named Women Founders Fund, a funding and mentoring program run by the tech giant Google. The program aims to nurture startups run by female entrepreneurs in Asian countries, including India, Japan, and South Korea, offering winners monetary and accelerating support.Kai Health develops solutions that analyze and pick healthy embryos for couples suffering the inability to conceive. Zenerate offers solutions that help real estate developers and constructors plan construction projects efficiently based on AI technology.Below are the excerpts of the session moderated by Jenny(Jihye) Park, a manager from Google for Startups APAC.

COMEUP, one of South Korea's largest startup events, kicked off on November 8 in Seoul. This year's conference has garnered significant attention, primarily due to South Korea's increasing influence in the global startup industry and its advanced positioning in the AI sector.Marking its fifth year since its inception in 2019, the annual event is aimed at fostering South Korea's startup segment and provide global startups with opportunities to secure investments and establish partnerships with investors. COMEUP 2023 is poised to become a truly international startup event, enabling startups, investors, and established companies from all over the world to expand their networks and explore future business collaborations. Some 60% of the participating startups are from overseas. CEOs, investors, and lawmakers from 35 countries, including Saudi Arabia, UAE, the US, France, Germany, Switzerland, and Japan, are participating in this event.“Innovation is no longer bound by nationality or borders. It will be achieved by those who can seamlessly bridge the borderless digital world with reality at a rapid pace," said Young Lee, the Minister of SMEs and Startups, in her opening remarks on the first day of the event."The ministry will spare no effort to support startups in advancing the startup industry," the minister added.She also outlined the ministry's plan to streamline its startup programs and organizations while enhancing benefits for both domestic and global startups that contribute to the growth of Korea's startup market. 

2013년 6월. 팀 황, 제럴드 야오, 조너선 첸은 샌프란시스코행 비행기에 몸을 실었다. 스타트업의 성지인 실리콘밸리에서 도전해 보고 싶다는 생각 하나만으로 무작정 감행한 일이었다. 아무런 네트워크, 후원자가 없던 세 명의 동갑내기들은 좁은 모텔에서 생활했다. 이들이 가진 것이라곤 랩톱과 아이디어뿐이었다.몇 달 후 기적 같은 일이 일어났다. 댈러스 매버릭스 구단주 마크 큐반, 야후 창업자 제리 양 등 전설적인 투자자들이 투자 의향을 밝힌 것이다. 실리콘밸리 유명 벤처캐피털 NEA까지 가세하며 130만달러(약 17억원) 규모의 초기 투자금이 확보됐다. 정책·법안 분석 및 예측 스타트업 ‘피스컬노트(FiscalNote)’는 이렇게 탄생했다. 투자자들은 ‘데이터 분석 알고리듬, AI 기술로 정책 분석가, 로비스트, 연구원들이 수행하던 정책·법안 분석 및 예측 기능을 대체한다’는 피스컬노트의 아이디어를 좋아했다. 이들의 아이디어, 솔루션에 관심을 가진 건 투자자뿐만 아니었다. 코카콜라, 쉐브론, 네슬레, 인텔, 레노버, 아스트라제네카, 3M, 세븐일레븐 같은 글로벌 기업, 정부·공공기관이 피스컬노트의 솔루션을 사용하기 시작했고, 직원 수는 1000명 이상으로 성장했다.

‘500, 100, 50, 50’미국의 수도 워싱턴 D.C.에 위치한 역사적인 건물 로널드 레이건 빌딩에서 열리는 ‘디파이 컨퍼런스(DEFY Conference)’를 설명하는 숫자들이다. 대한민국 과학기술정보통신부 산하 기관인 한국혁신센터(Korea Innovation Center, KIC) 워싱턴DC는 오는 10월 31일부터 11월 2일(현지시각)까지 사흘간 워싱턴 D.C.에서 디파이 컨퍼런스를 개최한다. 미국 전역과 한국에서 500명 이상의 핵심 인사들이 참석하는 대규모 행사다. 참석자 수를 제외한 100, 50, 50 세 가지 숫자로 디파이 컨퍼런스의 특징, 의미를 살펴봤다.  

AGI로 불리는 전지전능한 AI의 등장으로 다양한 분야에서 우려의 목소리가 높아지고 있습니다. 반복적이고 노동 집약적인 업무는 오랫동안 AI와 로봇으로 대체될 것으로 예상되어 왔지만, 변호사나 의사와 같은 지식 기반 전문직은 이러한 도전을 비켜갈 수 있는 분야로 여겨졌습니다. 하지만 사람처럼 생각하고 행동하는 AGI의 출현 가능성이 높아지며 이러한 예상조차 바뀌고 있습니다.‘AI의 습격’으로 본인의 일자리를 빼앗을 수도 있다는 위협때문에 많은 사람들은 의사 같은 전문직도 환자를 진단하고 치료하는 데 AI 솔루션을 도입하는 것을 반대할 것이라고 생각할 수 있습니다. 하지만, 최근 더밀크와 만난 의료용AI기업 루닛의 백승욱 의장은 실상은 그렇지 않다고 합니다. 많은 의사들이 의술 향상을 위해 첨단 기술을 기꺼이 활용할 의향을 보여주고 있다고 합니다.백 의장은 더밀크와의 인터뷰에서 "진단, 판독을 보조한다는 개념 자체가 이전부터 있었고, 의사분들이 AI에 대한 거부감을 가지는 경우는 거의 없었다,”라고 하며, “과거의 경우 AI의 도움을 받으려고 사용했더니, 너무 정확도가 떨어져서 그 동안 싫어했던 것이고, 오히려 쓸 만한 녀석이 나오면 얼마든지 환영하는 입장,”이라고 밝혔습니다. 현재 루닛에는 13명의 의사들이 근무하고 있습니다. 진료 목적이 아니라 대부분 R&D을 위한 인력이라고 하는데요. 개발자들의 경우 의료지식이 부족하기 때문에 의료AI개발, 의료계 네트워크 확장 등을 위해 의사들은 루닛에게는 꼭 필요한 존재라고 합니다. 백 의장은 내부에서 채용 중인 의사들 뿐 만 아니라 현직 외부 의사들과의 커뮤니케이션을 하고 있기 때문에 백 의장이 말하는 ‘의사들이 보는 AI’에 대한 답변에 신뢰가 갔습니다.

Jongkap Kim, CEO of the state-funded startup organization Global Digital Innovation Network (GDIN), believes that timing plays a crucial role in the success of businesses. He cited Meta’s acquisition of Instagram as a prime example. Had the social media firm not placed a $1 billion bet on the photo-sharing service in 2012, he said, other tech companies such as Google, Microsoft or Yahoo might have bought it. This scenario could have resulted in Meta losing its leadership in the social media realm.“In the fourth revolution industry driven by AI, being first is essential as a winner takes it all,” Kim told The Miilk in a recent interview at GDIN’s headquarters in Pangyo, south of Seoul.Kim said now is the time for GDIN to play a key role in elevating the local market. This involves helping local startups to go global and attract global companies to increase their presence in Korea.However, Kim said that the South Korean market, as is, operates under different rules, with a greater focus on acquiring startups at the lowest possible cost rather than on timing. There’s tendency to avoid taking high risks by acquiring promising yet still-unprofitable startups. Even venture capital firms specializing in startup investments tend to prioritize short-term returns over providing ongoing support through the ups and downs of a startup’s journey. Additionally, the relatively low competition in the market is hindering its advancement. In the IT sector, Naver and Kakao are nearly the only companies capable of making substantial acquisition deals. Consequently, startups are often undervalued due to limited competition in bidding process. If an M&A deal with one of these tech giants falls through, the other doesn’t even consider it as they deem the deal unworthy.Kim emphasized the need to recognize the time and effort that startups has long invested in developing their services and products, which is often overlooked in their valuation. He criticized the outdated evaluation methods used for decades by conglomerates, which focus solely on anticipated profits.“When the Korean startup sector advances to the next level with 10 tech companies as large as Kakao or Naver, more accurate evaluations of startups will become possible,” he said.

최근 더밀크가 만난 김종갑 GDIN(Global Digital Innovation Network, 구 본투글로벌) 대표는 인터뷰 내내 ‘타이밍,’ 그리고 ’시간’에 대해서 강조를 했다. 스타트업의 성공 요소 중 타이밍이 핵심적인 역할을 한다는 것이다. 김 대표는 운도 네트워크도 모두 타이밍의 영향을 받는 다고 한다. 미국 테네시주 밴더빌트대학교 대학원에서 가치평가(finance valuation)를 공부하며, 수많은 기업들의 가치평가를 연구했던 김종갑 대표의 말이라 더욱 설득력 있게 들렸다.김 대표는 타이밍의 중요성을 보여주는 사건으로 페이스북을 운영하는 메타의 2012년 인스타그램 인수를 예로 들었다. 메타가 인스타그램 10억 달러 인수 발표를 했을 당시 인스타그램의 임직원은 13명 정도였고, 매출도 없었던 상태. 하지만 시장에서는 사진 공유 서비스 인스타그램에 대한 관심이 높아졌고, 전 세계적으로 사용자수가 급증하고 있는 상태였다.김 대표는 “만약 메타가 인스타그램을 인수하지 않았다면, 구글, 혹은 마이크로소프트가 인수를 했을 것,” 이라고 말하며, “만약 세 곳이 하지 않았더라면 야후, 어도비 등 다른 IT 회사들이 인수를 했을 것,”이라고 덧 붙였다. 즉, 그만큼 소셜 미디어의 주도권 다툼이 치열했고, 인수 하려는 플레이어들이 많았던 것. 메타의 인수가 성공했던 것은 메타가 먼저 해당 서비스를 출시하고 성장시키고 싶었기 때문이라고 김 대표는 전했다.“(메타가) 협상으로 6개월을 끌다가 다른 기업들이 인스타그램을 인수를 했다면, 시장은 지금과 달라졌을 것이다. 아직도 인스타그램을 대체할 소셜미디어가 없지 않나,” 라고 김 대표는 전했다.
